The clocks the rules set
Put in the date that starts a clock, and see the day it runs out.
Ontario’s regulation sets several fixed clocks for the IPRC and the IEP. Alberta’s Education Act sets one, for asking the Minister to review a board’s decision, and for the rest it sets none. That is worth knowing too. Each clock below is a sentence from one of our guides, with the rule it comes from.
Days are calendar days, weekends included, counted from the day after the date you put in.
This is not legal advice, and Prebrief is not a lawyer. The rules themselves govern, not this page, and they can change. The dates you put in stay on this page. Nothing is saved or sent.
Ontario: the IPRC and the IEP
You asked the principal, in writing, to refer your child to an IPRC
The principal’s written reply is due 15 days after that date.
“Within 15 days of receiving your written request, the principal must acknowledge it in writing, tell you in writing approximately when the committee will meet, and give you a copy of the board’s parent guide.”

This deadline is the school’s.
The IPRC sent its written decision, and you disagree with it
Your written request for a follow-up meeting is due 15 days after that date.
“Ask for a follow-up meeting with the committee, in writing, within 15 days of receiving the decision.”

This deadline is yours. Send it before the day, not on it.
Your written notice of appeal is due 30 days after that date.
“Appeal, by filing a written notice of appeal with the secretary of the board within 30 days of receiving the decision.”

This deadline is yours. Send it before the day, not on it.
If you have the follow-up meeting, this date no longer applies. Use the next clock once you have its decision.
You had the follow-up meeting, and you still disagree
Your written notice of appeal is due 15 days after that date.
“If you had the follow-up meeting, the deadline is 15 days after you receive the decision from that meeting.”

This deadline is yours. Send it before the day, not on it.
Your child was placed in a special education program after an IPRC
The completed IEP, and your copy, are due 30 school days after that date.
“Once your child is placed in a special education program after an IPRC, the principal must make sure the IEP is completed, and a copy sent to you, within 30 school days of the placement, and must consult you in developing it.”

This deadline is the school’s. If day thirty passes with no IEP, write to the principal, name the regulation, and ask for the date.
Alberta
The school board decided about your child’s specialized supports and services, or an expulsion
Your written request for the Minister to review it is due 60 days after that date.
“A request for the Minister of Education to review a board’s decision about specialized supports and services, or an expulsion, has to be in writing within 60 days of the date you were informed of the decision (Education Act, section 43).”

Where Alberta sets no clock
Writing the IPP
Alberta sets no provincial number of days for this. Some divisions set a date in their own procedure.
“Ask your school for your division’s procedure and the date in it.”
Our guide: The school isn’t following the IPP.
Appealing to the school board
The Act gives no number of days here. Your division’s dispute resolution policy comes first.
“If that does not resolve it, section 42 lets you appeal to the board a decision that significantly affects your child’s education, within a reasonable time of being told about it.”
Our guide: The school isn’t following the IPP.
Reviewing the IPP
No fixed number of days. The review happens at the school’s regular reporting periods.
“If it’s been a long stretch with no review, asking for one is reasonable and normal.”
Our guide: How to prepare for an IPP meeting.
